- This is a minimally invasive procedure used to relieve the pressure on the nerve roots caused by a herniated disc (slipped disc) in your lower back. The procedure involves using a small tube that allows access to the damaged disc. Using a microscope, the surgeon can clear away the herniated part of the disc and any loose fragments, and this relieves the pain of sciatica. The rest of the disc is left in place and continues to function as a cushion between the vertebrae. Because the incision involved is very small (less than 2 cm), most patients will be able to go home within 24 hours and resume the usual level of activity in a few weeks.
